Americans constitute about 5% of the world population, yet we use 25% of the world’s oil. Sixty percent of the American oil is used as liquid fuel to power our vehicles. If America were able to substitute different liquid fuels for oil could we reduce our oil dependence? Absolutely and in a big way! Can it really be done? Yes, it can. Flex Fuel technology exists and can be incorporated in new cars for $100 per vehicle.
If we want a different tomorrow we must begin doing things differently today. Don’t 35 years of repetitive oil crises illustrate that foreign oil dependence is our problem? Isn’t it also clear that we can rely only on America and American ingenuity? Will the toll of record oil prices on the global economy become a stimulus for change? Or do we remain mired in debate as to where to the lay blame or who is responsible to get us out of this oil crisis? Finger pointing is not productive, particularly when there is enough blame to be shared by the OPEC monopoly, the Oil Companies, the automobile industry, Congress, America’s lack of a comprehensive Energy Policy, America’s “addiction to oil," as well as supply & demand imbalances. Recently, the Saudi’s added to the list of culprits the US dollar.
Today Congress can set America on the path of Flexible Fuel Technology which would enable our vehicles to be powered by any combination of gasoline, methanol or ethanol. Today we can begin shaping the energy marketplace that will exist 10 years from today. Imagine a future where instead of going to the gas station you go to a fuel supermarket and you choose which competitively priced fuel will power your vehicle.

If you agree, you must write your Senators and Congressman to tell them to become sponsors of the OPEN FUEL STANDARD ACT which began circulating in the Senate US Senate on June 10, 2008. We can’t afford for Congress to ponder this another 35 years!

With globalization, our world has flattened. Policies effecting our economy, security, foreign policy and energy have coalesced and have become inextricably linked. The export of our dollars to the Middle East is funding the extremists and the wars we are fighting and the terrorists we must protect ourselves against. It is time for America to change our dependence on foreign oil, not just talk about changing it.
